The body is one of the great wonders of the universe!
Did you know?
- There are 45 miles of nerves just in your skin. - You are about 70 percent water. - Your body has about 5.6 liters (6 quarts) of blood. - In the brain there are 1,000,000,000,000 (a million million) individual nerve cells. - There are more synapses in the brain than there are stars in the universe. - You enteric nervous system (Gut brain) has over 100 million neuron. - You give birth to 100 billion new red cells every day. - Your brain generates more electrical impulses than all of the world's telephones. - Your lungs inhale over two million liters of air every day. - Your 5.6 liters of blood circulates through the body three times every minute. - In 24 hours, the blood in your body travels a total of 12,000 miles. - Nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as fast as 170 miles per hour. - The tooth is the only part of you that can't repair itself. - The life span of a taste bud is ten days. - Your brain consumes 20 percent of the body’s energy.
The human brain is estimated to have about one hundred billion nerve cells, two million miles of axons, and a million billion synapses, making it the most complex structure, natural or artificial, on earth. - Tim Green, Stephen Heinemann, and Jim Gusella, “Molecular Neurobiology and Genetics: Investigation of Neural Function and Dysfunction”
It boggles the mind to think how the body carries out all these activities (and much, much more) so seamlessly and effortlessly. You are truly amazing! The more you study how the body and brain works the more amazed you will be. A common paradox of anatomy and physiology students is that, “the more you study the less you know”. This is because the more you learn you find more stuff to learn about. The sad thing is that average person does not even know how amazing they are.
We break the body down into parts or systems to study and diagnosis disease. But in reality there are no divisions, the body functions amazingly as one whole system. It is shocking how little faith we have in our bodies, and how much faith we have in our “educated” mind or a TV infomercial. This often causes us to do things to inhibit, slow, or stop the powers with in the body from doing what it does naturally. Work to support your body to function as it was made to do. We live in spite of what we do to ourselves.
You are AMAZING!
It has been said that your body is a self contained kingdom. You have a built in pharmacy to monitor and make all the hormones and chemicals you need. You have a food processing plant that takes the food you eat and breaks it down into basic building blocks for new tissue. You have a transportation system to carry these building blocks, oxygen, hormones and other essential things to cells. And then take away toxins and waste cellular byproducts. You have a waste disposal system to treat and remove the waste and toxins. You have a state of the art security monitoring system to detect problems or intruders. You have a army like defense system that fights off intruders, and foreign toxins.
You have a construction company that tears down old or damaged tissue and builds new tissue. You have a power plant that produces all the necessary energy you need. You have a pumping station that runs 24 hours a day to pump blood around our body. You have a external monitoring system that allows your eyes, ears and other senses to monitor your environment. You have an air purification and oxygen system. You have a communication network that monitors, controls and communicates with every part of the body. You have a strong frame that uses the muscular system to allow us to move. You have a master gigantic computer that monitors, interprets, controls and learns everything that is go on in and around you. All this and much more is your kingdom. The more you learn about your body the more amazed you will be!
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
The human brain has about 100,000,000,000 (100 billion) neurons.
From all the oxygen that a human breathes, twenty percent goes to the brain.
Your brain is 80% water.
It is not possible to tickle yourself. The
cerebellum, a part of the brain, warns the rest of the brain that you
are about to tickle yourself. Since your brain knows this, it ignores
the resulting sensation.
Over 90% of diseases are caused or complicated by stress.
It is estimated that a baby
loses about half their neurons before they are born. This process is
sometimes referred to as pruning and may eliminate neurons that do not
receive sufficient input from other neurons.
